Feeling lighter with the text sent, she refocused on Gray and Cabernet. She could hear Grayâs low, steady voice, encouraging the horse as they walked farther into the paddock. Sheâd always marveled at his gift with animals, his love for them innately entwined with his ability to care for them. Sheâd always believed that an animal sensed that quality in him and responded to the inherent safety they felt in his presence.
It was a gift.
One heâd only honed and refined over the years. One that would serve him well as he brought animals into his rescue.
As if sensing her scrutiny, Gray looked up, their gazes locking. She waved, suddenly nervous without knowing why.
This was Gray.
And for all the emotional territory theyâd covered over the past few weeksâtodayâs revelations by far the biggestâsheâd have thought she would feel more comfortable.
So why had nerves taken up residence in her stomach with all the finesse of a stampede?
âWould you like to come meet Cabernet?â
Gray kept his tone modulated, his hold firm on Cabernetâs halter as they continued their forward movement. It was only as they got closer that Harper heard the softer, murmured words Gray spoke to the horse.
âCabernet, I have someone Iâd like you to meet. Her nameâs Harper and sheâs a friend. Youâre safe with her, just like you are with me.â
That gentle crooning tugged at her heart, and she watched and waited from where she stood at the paddock rail as Gray, Cabernet and Macyâs father, Rick, came closer.
âMacy, honey,â her father called out. âLead Cooper over to the far side of the paddock. Weâre going to give Cabernet a bit of space.â
The girl did as she was asked, taking Cooperâs halter. She started leading the horse when she seemed to remember herself. With her hand in her riding jacket, she dug out some extra sugar cubes and ran them back to Harper.
âA nice way to sweeten the introduction.â
Harperâs hand closed over the cubes. âThank you.â
With Cooper off to the farther reaches of the paddock, Gray waved a hand, gesturing Harper over. âWhy donât you come on in here? Bring some of that sugar I know you now have in your pocket.â
Harper considered going to the gate but opted to climb through the fence rails instead, such was her impatience to meet the horse.
Whatever feelings she had for Grayâand she was increasingly torn on what to do about themâshe could focus on this horse and what it meant to Grayâs future.
Because whether or not she belonged with Gray, she knew he didnât deserve to live a life alone. And part of finding that future was building a life for himself that made him happy.
She moved cautiously toward the horse, Gray continuing to talk to him softly. Sheâd nearly reached them when she heard a heavy shout from the opposite end of the paddock.
Macy screamed as Cooper reared, the large horse too much for her to handle as he spooked over something. Her father dropped his hold on Cabernet, racing for his daughter.
